COMPOSITION AND DESIGN in the landscape by Zoom

About The Instructor
Ann Willsie, SFCA, has spent most of her life painting in oils, both in studio and in the outdoors, en plein air. She has participated in and helped organize many plein air events throughout Canada during her career. Being primarily a landscape painter, Ann’s style of painting is very loose and impressionistic, characterized by thick oil paint, harmonious colour and visible brushstrokes. Most of her paintings depict the splendour of the natural landscape around us, both large-scale panoramic vistas as well as close-up trees, grasses and flowers.
Her work is shown in galleries in Ontario, Alberta and B.C., and held in collections around the world. She is a Senior Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, Associate Member of the Oil Painters of America, and has won numerous awards in various FCA shows and Plein Air Festivals. Ann spends most of her time working and teaching at her studio in Lake Country, B.C. See her website at www.annwillsie.com.
Workshop Description
COMPOSITION AND DESIGN IN THE LANDSCAPE is for all levels of experience. Every good painting begins with a great design. Before you commit paint and time to a painting, it is very important to ensure that the composition and overall design is going to work. We will be talking about using photo references, including choosing photos for paintings, how to interpret them into a workable subject, what to think about before we start our painting and going beyond the photo.
This course will be focusing on building a successful painting from scratch.I will be guiding you through doing thumbnail sketches, trying different compositions, combining elements from different photo references to create a great composition. Remember, the simplest designs make the best paintings. We will be talking about looking for patterns and big shapes in your images, determining the darkest darks and lightest lights; focal points, color harmony and rhythm and flow in the painting.
Each day of the workshop will include a brief discussion of subject matter, followed by a demo, and finishing off with questions and answers. There will be exercises designed to help you grasp the concepts that we have discussed. The fourth workshop will be a review and discussion of students’ work done during the workshop – this will be an excellent learning experience for everyone involved.
The workshop will run September 30, October 14 & 21, from 10 am until 1 pm on Zoom. On October 28 we will have a "Review and Discussion" session, which will run from 10 am until 2 pm. Each student can submit their best painting from the workshop for a review by Ann, which is an excellent learning opportunity. All sessions will be recorded and available for one month following the workshop.
