CONTEMPORARY APPROACHES with joan fullerton
About The Instructor
JOAN FULLERTON, BFA, MFA, was born into a Wyoming ranching family and grew up with a deep regard for the natural world. While raising three children she studied watercolor with Edgar Whitney, Frank Webb, Charles Reid and other nationally known watercolorists. In 1985, after she had earned her degrees, she became a college art instructor until 2003. She then fulfilled a life-long dream and moved to Taos, NM to paint full time. After eight successful years in NM, she is now located in Denver, CO where she paints and teaches, and is in great demand to teach workshops. Her work has been in galleries, juried shows and museums since the early 1970’s and she has shown internationally. |
Workshop Description
CONTEMPORARY APPROACHES for self expression in mixed media is a dynamic "playground of innovation" full of inspiring demonstrations, lectures, encouragement and practice. We will learn how to coax an image out of an abstract background, how to paint abstractly from a reference, and how to paint non-objectively utilizing only the power and intricacies of shape, color and line. We will explore them all by working intuitively and embrace and respond to what shows up. Working in a series will help reinforce the concepts. We’ll touch on notions of confidence, procrastination, vulnerability, curiosity, courage, talent, play, inspiration, intuition, our mean critic, metaphor, symbolic elements, competition, marketing, our belief systems, finding balance, and more! There will be plenty of time for "playing" and creating along with individual attention and guidance. Joan is especially gifted in helping students gain more freedom in the creative process and discover their own unique artistic voice. She believes that people are more open to learning and inspiration when they are having fun, so her workshops are filled with laughter and lightness. A multitude of approaches and techniques will give beginners encouragement and confidence, while more advanced students will benefit from Joan’s insightful solutions to their artistic challenges.
